November 12, 2018 - Back in October, I was very fortunate to be offered a position back in the department where I did my PhD. As my position with San Diego Zoo would be coming to an end in just a few months, the timing was ideal. I am happy to announce that I am now back in Umeå, Sweden working as a researcher in large part with wildlife genomic data.
July 5, 2018 - I have finally jumped onto the Twitter bandwagon. Why it took so long, I really can't say. I've been enjoying reading so many interesting posts and learning so much. I also tweet occasionally, mostly about compelling scientific articles. I welcome anyone interested to follow me @AnitaNorman and, chances are, I will follow you back.
March 23, 2018 - The American Genetic Association has caught my interest both in direct relation to my work as well as generally. I am happy to report that I have now become a member and I very much look forward to reading articles from the Journal of Heredity and hopefully attending future meetings.
February 28, 2018 - Check out our new paper in Conservation Genetics Resources entitled Testing a new SNP-chip on the Alpine and Apennine brown bear (Ursus arctos) populations using non-invasive samples. This paper uses the SNP-chip we developed for Scandinavian bears in northern Europe on two brown bear populations in southern Europe. Read more to find out how it stacked up.
December 27, 2017 - For Christmas, I received an exciting gift... The Sibley Birder's Life List and Field Diary. Can you guess how I spent the rest of Christmas? Yep. Birdwatching at Cuyamaca Lake near Julian where I started my fresh new life list with ten species. I am looking forward to getting to know the birds in this area (and others) better.
March 20, 2017 - After ten weeks of theory, field trips, homework, and project work, I am happy to announce that I am now a certified California naturalist! What exactly does this mean? It means I have enough knowledge of the natural history and ecology of California (particularly southern California) that I can do things such as lead interpretive hikes and participate in a multitude of other volunteer and conservation opportunities that require some local knowledge. I am so impressed with the amazing diversity that exists here and hope to continue to soak up more knowledge as I venture out and about in California.
January 9, 2017 - Starting tomorrow, I will partake in the California Naturalists Certification program. I am super excited to learn of the natural history and all the unique species and aspects of California's ecosystems.
December 19, 2016 - After more than seven months of living in SoCal, I finally had an opportunity to see some of the countryside. It had breathtaking scenery and was teeming with wildlife... coyotes, deer, fresh mountain lion tracks, wild turkeys, several hawk species and countless other bird species. The dusting of snow and ice made me feel right at home. Pics are soon to come. Please stay posted.
August 22, 2016 - Our Landscape Relatedness article is now online! Read all about how we detected fine-scale population structure in the Scandinavian brown bear using relatedness and why this structure may be a conservation concern here.
June 9, 2016 - Tomorrow I leave for Anchorage, Alaska to attend the annual International Bear Association (IBA) conference. There I will present my PhD work on landscape relatedness during the Genetics session on Thursday, June 16 at 4:45. I look forward to meeting new people and colleagues that I have not seen in a while.
May 18, 2016 - Since the beginning of the month, I have had the pleasure of working in a new position at San Diego Zoo Global as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. I am excited to join such a great conservation organization and I look forward to updating this page with further news as my work progresses.
April 12, 2016 - Our new article on using reconstructed pedigrees to estimate population size is now available. Check it out.
March 30, 2016 - I am happy to announce that on March 18th, I successfully defended my PhD thesis. My opponent was Prof. Per Palsbøll from the University of Groningen. The entire day was positively unforgettable.
